testing light switch reheostat function 120-130

I'm trying to cull known bad switches, er, well, actually find known good switches from a bag of 8 or so. Without referring me to a diagram, I want to know which 2 contacts I can hook my ohm meter to, and, with the switch in "on" (pulled out at least one click) position, rotate the knob and check for smooth "dimming" of the dash accessory light as measured on the meter. Is that clear enough?

The switch has 5 contacts - 2 at the bottom (on the "flat") 58a & 56, and 3 at the top - (say at 11 o'clock, 12 and 1), 30, 58b and 58.

Anybody been here recently?

Anybody drilled out the rivets to disassemble and clean the winding and been able to reassemble successfully?
