This darned in-tank fuel pump! 200

Hey Board!

As many know, I've been working on getting this 1989 245 wagon up to snuff as a daily driver. The amount of work seems endless and never-ending. Not complaining because I actually enjoy the work and especially the feel of the car when it's running correctly. The car sat for seven years in storage before I put her in service. Now, it's a daily driver, but I struggled to get her to this point. First and foremost, I changed out the two fuel pumps as they were frozen. I found a pristine new main pump in the bone yard! Yeah! Next, I pulled the in-tank pump and frankly I don't have a clue how that thing worked at all. It literally fell apart in my hands. The two metal tubes which run down were full of holes and were seperated from the top of the unit, completely. There was no sock filters left.

Ok, new in-tank fuel pump pulled from the bone yard and the car started and has run pretty well, and for several weeks. However, I suspect that this pump is going out too. Symptoms are bizarre sudden hesitation and if you push on the accelerator, craps out. Success comes when I pull off to the side of the road and wait a few mins. Turn key and off I go. However, this is getting worse. I thought it was the vacuum hose from the flame trap to the intake manifold that is spongy and loose. Temporarily, I used a nylon zip tie to cinch it down and it fooled me into thinking that I had fixed the problem. Today, after driving for about 45 mins, the hesitation started again. Not good, and sometimes dangerous. Other drivers are NOT patient with this kind of problem. Grrrrrr.

Looking in my box of spare Volvo parts, I see an in tank motor which is very clean and shinny. It is NOT the AC/Delco brand and I wonder if anyone knows what it is. I expect that I will be putting that in this weekend. On the bottom of the motor it says, EP31-10 A (the A is circled). The top says EP30-16
The silver side case seems to say E8397 136A.

I think I need to get a new sock and try this one. Anyone think this problem is something else?

Thanks so much Brickboarders!
