Which hose is fuel line return? 1991 240 200

I'm still having problems with occasional stalling, and feel the need to check my fuel pumps. I don't own any kind of fuel guages for checking pressure. Reading Bentley for instructions.

In the attached photo, which hose is the fuel line return?

Also, I notice that hose "A" is loose, should it have some kind of clip?

Other questions:

When I replace fuel filter, are there any other things I should be replacing?
Can/should the fuel pump check valve be tested?
Any other routine maintenance to do while in that area?
IF I wind up removing the transfer pump for inspection, what to use to replace the gasket for the access plate?

Thanks,
Keith Ostertag
