flame trap hose

So I started to smell exhaust in the cabin of my 93 940 and tracked it down to a trashed flame trap hose - the one that goes from the oil separator to the flame trap housing. I replaced this only 2 years ago and was surprised by its poor condition. While putting things back together i realized that I don't really understand how the vacuum is distributed through this gizmo - there is some pressure coming from the crankcase and then vacuum from the small hose on the manifold and vacuum from the large hose that goes back to the throttle body. What about unmetered air?
