Connecting the tach wire to the cluster double spade does what exactly? 200

(pls read before you react).

There are numerous threads here about connecting the red & white tach wire to the cluster double spade (speed calibration/ cruise). Most of them include "fry", "burn", "destroy", "smoke"....

But none I found mention specifically what is damaged.

Here's why I ask: a friend just bought a 90 240 with working speedo, gauges, lights, .... but a non-working odometer. I pulled the cluster to look at the odo gear and found that the red & white wire was attached to the double spade.

Maybe the wire isn't hot - I'll check that. But if it is, what shouldn't be working.

(on the lighter side: someone removing the cluster broke the plastic around it so the screws on the left attach to a floating piece of plastic. The solution? A foam pillow was wedged behind the cluster and the headlight switch was glued to it.)
