aw70 transmission slipping... where should i start???? 200 1991

i drive a 91 240 wagon with an aw70 transmission... a couple of months ago the transmission started slipping a little here and there... i was out of town and my father inlaw took it upon himself to add some atf to it. he over filled it. when i returned to town last month my wife told me that the transmission had gotten worse. i checked the fluid and it was way over filled... i drained the excess and took it for a drive and it took almost 3000 rpms for first gear to engage... it caught hard and would not shift into second on its own... it shifts fine when i manually shift... i was just gonna get a whole new transmission but then i got laid off so i have decided to save my money and try to fix the problem myself. any suggestions on what the problem might be and where i should start... or should i just bite the bullet and buy a whole new transmission? thanks
