Hushers - Do I Really Need Them? 900 1993

Me agai with one more dumb question on my head gasket job. Replaced hushers about 5 years back, engine seemed quieter, but it actually didn't last that long. Disassembly revealed hushers squished and 2 or 3 of them actually in pieces. Since these don't affect valve lash (not exactly sure why), do I really need them? Thanks.
