85 245 Transmission parts question 200 1985

In removing my transmission, I found out where the source of my leak was.

in this picture (hopefully it works fine) http://image68.webshots.com/468/1/71/36/2671171360102125362uyVdaG_ph.jpg

you can see the areas where my leak/issue is. That isn't my picture, btw.

On mine, the part where the shaft comes out, seemingly had a loose ring (?), and the bottom part (the smaller one), part of the bearing set up popped out.

Also, there seems to be a gap in the rings (?) around the shaft. Kind of like the rings on a piston, with the gap. I realize that description is bad, I can provide pictures later (I just finished working on getting it off my car) if the one above doesn't show up or make sense.

My questions are these:

The ring that came off (it's flat), is that a vital part? Not in the sense that I'm going to throw it away or nothing...but what is it?

IPD sold me a seal, where does it go? I don't see any seals transmission.

I'll post pictures tomorrow, because I think I'm failing to describe this accurately.
