82 244 clutch gone out? 200 1982

So on my way home from work earlier my clutch suddenly stopped working in my 82 244. It has an m46 trans and i had been experiencing some shift linkage problems prior to this. i figured it would most likely be the cable but the odd thing is the noise it was making. A high pitched whine/squeak is happening when i rev the engine in neutral and it follows the engine rpm and is not made when i rev it with my foot on the clutch. After having to start my car in first and just gas it, my clutched worked fine but the noise persists. i was thinking maybe it was the throwout bearing but i honestly have no clue. Any thoughts?
thanks.
