Apparently found and fixed the issue. The wire to the heater control light (which hadn't worked since I bought the car three months ago) had broken and was intermittently shorting to the body. The POs "fix" (installing a bigger capacity fuse) worked for a while, but then didn't. The downside is that the broken white wire is only the tip of the iceberg I found behind the dash, which I haven't had time to fully explore yet. Looks like a big project ahead to sort out that mess.
Big, big thanks to Eric Hamlet of Hi Performance Automotive in Torrance, CA. Eric installed an overdrive in my car a week ago and happened to read my post a few minutes after I put it up. He called because he was concerned that something he might have done in installing the o/d could have affected the switch. (He installed the o/d indicator light near the light switch, so it wasn't a crazy thought.) Eric helped troubleshoot the system over the phone, which I was able to do using the supply of extra fuses that he very kindly gave me when I left his shop.
The short version of this is that Eric's call was a great example of going the extra mile for your customers. I don't even live near enough to be a regular customer, yet Eric went out of his way to make sure that he took care of me.
I'm thrilled with the overdrive Eric and his brother Ian installed, but I might be even more thrilled to feel that someone as knowledgeable as Eric has my back. I can't recommend his services highly enough if you happen to be in the Los Angeles area.
