940 Automatic / Access to Fuses & Relay -- Catch 22? 900

At the risk of embarrassing myself ...
Question: What is the recommended step-by-step procedure for accessing the fuses and relays in a 1994 940 automatic?

1 -- The automatic gear shift / selector IS IN THE WAY and has to be moved out of park.
2 -- Common sense (eh? wot?) tells me I should disconnect the battery to do anything electrical on the car (like monkeying with fuses / relays).
3 -- However -- Disconnect the battery and you can't move the gear shift / selector (can you?)

When I changed my fuel pump relay I must have left the battery connected, turned the key to position 1, moved the gear selector forward out of the way, and accessed everything, switched relays with the power connected. But this can't be right can it? Can someone please tell me what I am missing --

Thanks,

Rob
