Damn synthetic tranny fluid? 700

I've got a 1990 740 with unknown mileage, probably around 250k. For the last trans flush I decided to go synthetic.

That was maybe 2000 miles ago.

Now I've got a big leak around the bell housing, I'm assumin it's the front seal but I haven't put my back on the concrete yet.

The strange thing is that the leaking fluid smells like trans fluid and the dipstick shows it low but the puddle on the ground is white/tan/brown milky sort of fluid. The little bit of fluid that is on the dipstick looks like normal trans fluid.

Anyone know what that's all about?
