Why injectors so dirty? 200 1980

Always prided myself on keeping a fairly clean engine compartment on my '80 242DL with M45. But yesterday, for the first time, took out the injectors to check the spray patern. Couldn't believe how full of crud they were; black oil & grit all over the injector & the hole they're in. Am positive they are the originals, 32 ys. old & 130K miles. So I'm going to replace them & the seals & fittings. Had the air sensor & fuel distributor cleaned already. My question is how come all that dirt & are they inserted directly into the combustion chamber, not into the intake manifold? Thanks very much.

Cal
