A/C inop on my 1992 245 200 1992

I have just purchased the car. Previous owner said that the AC "just stopped" working one day, about 3 years ago...
With the car running and AC switch engaged, I am only able to read about .5v on the wire going to the compressor. Where is the best place to look? AC compressor is obviously not engaging.
Any/all help greatly appreciated!

I have read about the printed circuit board and the relay but am not sure which direction to go in. Relay just turns on the fan if it isn't already correct? So if I have the fan on, I would be bypassing the relay anyways yes/no?
