Ticking noise near valve cover 700

Hi,
I have a 1988 740 turbo with b230ft engine sohc. I have had this problem for as long as I've had the car. The thing is the engine ticks like - tick tick tick - while idling and the ticking will get faster as the engine goes faster like tick-tick-tick. Kind of hard to explain but anyway the noise sounds like it's coming from inside the valve cover and I am pretty confident this is not an exhaust leak.
Does this sound like something with a valve?
And if so would I be able to pinpoint the exact valve to make a fix? and again if so is this a difficult or expensive operation?
Thanks for any help,
Benton
