Question about coils of wire in black connector above in-tank pump 200 1980

I went to replace my in-tank pump and noticed the black connector above the motor had a bunch of wire pulled out of the coils inside the housing. It's really a mess now, and I hesitate to try and recoil those wires back in the container.

It appears they wanted some kind of air coil inductance built into the motor connection. Is there a reason for this? Can I eliminate this and make my own connector?
