Sounds like you have your answer re. timing.

I notice in your photo that you are using a solid upper rad. hose.
You may want to use a hose that is more like the original which had an accordian type of shape in the center to take the flexing of the engine. It would take a little stress off that upper radiator neck since the hose is so short.

It looks nice.
