In tank fuel pump return line fix 700 1991

My 91 740 turbo wagon has a weeping gas leak where the steel line enters the large round bung to the gastank. It is badly corroded between the 5/16" rubber hose and the tank screw cover.

To replace the corroded section can I just open the ring to the tank, pull the sending unit up enough to splice a new section of 5/16" steel gasline in place (keeping the same length)and replace the assembly?

Fuel pump works fine and I need this to pass a safety test to licence the vehicle.

any thoughts?
