Shift knob question 200 1989

So, can anyone explain to me how the shift knob is properly attached to the shaft? It looks like the previous owner (poorly) glued the plastic sleeve inside the shift knob directly onto the shaft. It's cracking and yet still stuck on there, even when I pull the knob off.

Now I've ordered a new "used" one from eBay, and I'd like to put it on, but I'm not sure what I'm in store for. Do I have to crack this old plastic sleeve off in order to put the new one on? I'm assuming I will, even though I haven't seen the "new" knob, but is this supposed to be glued on? Again I'm assuming it was glued on because I can see poorly dripped glue, and I'm pretty sure Volvo wouldn't have done something so sloppy in the factory. If it's supposed to be glued on there, what kind of glue?

Any help would be helpful, as I'm about to embark on this without any help from any manuals.
