idle burp 900

my 940 has developed a funny blip when it is idling. the idle is very stable, but when I'm sitting at a light for long enough it will suddenly shudder and drop down to a few hundred RPM, then immediately go back up to higher than the idel point, then stabilize. it almost makes a "burping" sound when it does this, for lack of a better description. It doesn't seem to do it predictably...but it does seem to be happening more frequently. when it happen,s it sounds like there is an electrical switch going off--and if I have the a/c fan running I can hear it suddenly slow when the idle drops. is there anything obvious I should check for?
