help - car wont start, probably something something simple, but what? 700 1990

Hi all,

have 760 gle. went away for month now car wont start.
battery charge fine, checked for fuel - undid fuel rail rhs after pressure regulator- fuel comes out under pressure.
used spare spark plug to check for spark against each spark plug lead. in all cases spark detected. removed spark plugs and examined them - they look fine, fairly new - bosch +4 platinums 10k kms old
removed distributor cap early in the piece and made sure clean and dry.

i suspect either :-
1 another component has died (but what)
2. something else (but what)

all ideas gratefully accepted.
