Suspension and steering question 700

Hi,
I have a '88 740 wagon and after replacing both lower ball joints I have new front end clatter. My problem is, I am not to sure on what part is the culprit and my manual is of no help on this one.
The noise itself sounds like it comes from within the boot where the tie rod connects to something by the steering gear, but I don't even know how it connects. Also the same clanking noise happens on both driver and passenger side.
Does this sound like tie rods? (the wheel does move side to side a lot and tie rod ends are newer)
Or I saw a intermediate shaft lower u-joint in the manual, is this a possibility as well?
If any of that made sense I would appreciate any input,
Thank you,
Benton
