Manual sunroof: turns idly, out of alignment? 700

Hello all,

I'm having a bit of an issue with the manual sunroof on our 1987 744 GLE. The handle would basically turn without anything happening, so I took it apart to find that the teeth on the mechanism were not connected at all to the teeth on the inside of the handle. It looks like the piece on the roof (to which the handle connects) is too far up and to the right, basically not touching the handle. I suspect it was rammed sidways and stuck like that.

Any help on how to remove the mechanism and reinstall everything? I will try to get some photos later to better illustrate the problem, but any help would be appreciated until then.
