burning oil....good compression...valve stem seals or rings? 200

Hello all I'm about to do a valve stem seal job, but I don't want to waste my time if it won't fix my problem. I've read a lot of mixed thoughts on various forum postings via Google search and some people swear there is no way valve stem seals on the 240 will cause excessive oil consumption and lots of smoke. On the other hand I had my compression tested by a volvo certified mechanic and it was great, 155-170 Across all cylinders. How else would it burn oil so bad there's a smoke screen if I let off gas and.then punch it ? My only idea is valve stem seals. Has anyone ever had burning oil and smoke and found the culprit to be the seals? Or is it not logical?
