M40 won't go into 1st, 2nd in heavy traffic 444-544

After driving in horrible stop and go traffic for a while yesterday afternoon, and having the car get quite warm, it started getting impossible to get the car into 1st or 2nd when stopped. No grinding when I tried to get it in gear, it just wouldn't go. I could just barely get it in there if I got the car rolling in 2nd or 3rd (2nd got very bad too).

This used to happen on the old M40 I just swapped out of my '61 210. The replacement is a later model M40, and is overall MUCH quieter. But now it's having this same issue. The only similarity between the two is shifter and the top cover. I'm now kinda wishing I used the top cover it had on it, and just plugged the reverse light switch hole.

Any ideas?
