Thoughts on retrofitting stock air filter with K&N unit 200 1986

I recently saw a pic of an engine compartment, don't recall where, that the owner had removed the air filter box and attached a conical closed end K&N air filter to the air filter side of the AMM with a fender mounted elbow. Any thoughts on this type of set up to allow more air for the engine to breathe or would it be a waste of time and $$$?

Thanks for your thoughts on this in advance.
