89 240 Timing Belt Installation - Harder Than It Looks - Suggestions 200

Hello Everyone -

I have gotten to the point of installing the timing belt on my 89 240 after removing the balancer and installing the new crank gear.
Well let me tell you- either my method is wrong or this is and absolute pain to do.
I have read perhaps 40 different how-to instructionals - no help .
I have aligned all the marks correctly.
But when I get to stretching the new belt over any one of the sprockets (that I have chosen as the last sprocket) -the belt is too tight.
Example - I have first placed the belt on the crank gear, then on the intermediate shaft then tried to get it on the cam gear - can't do. I have the tensioner compressed with a drill bit - still can't get the belt on the camgear.
My method is perhaps flawed since I have the belt on the tensioner before I try to get the belt on the camshaft gear.
The darn belt is just too tight.
Then there is the problem of the intermediate shaft moving - it takes little force to move the IS and then I have to start over.
There are no how to instructions I haven't read.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
