B16 to B20 444-544

You don't have to change all of those other things, but you might choose to.

Crossmember: definately not. Use the B16 engine mount brackets and the B20 will drop right into place. No need to change this.

You don't have to change the radiator suppport nor the radiator, but the lower fitting on the B16 radiator is on the left hand side, while the fitting on the B20 is on the right hand side. You can have the radiator modified, or you can get creative with a longer lower rad hose and/or some 90 degree elbows from the plumbing section at the hardware store. I still have the original rad in my '57, and it's done a fine job of keeping a 2130cc B20 nice and cool.

You may find that the right side hood hinge contacts the forward air filter (if you're using SU carbs). If that happens, you might be able to adjust the hood hinge fitment to get the clearance you need; or you might try a smaller air filter.

If you find a front center section and hood from a B18 fitted PV, it will (pretty much) bolt right on, and the hinges won't interfere, and it'll hold a radiator that has the lower fitting in the proper place.

I've heard of people mating B20s to the older transmissions, but I'd just find an M40 and use that. If your car currently has a 3 speed transmission, you'll have to shorten the driveshaft a bit to get it to fit behind a 4 speed, but if it's already 4 speed it'll be the right length already. May or may not fit the flange on the transmission, however.

Overdrive is cool but requires enlarging the transmission tunnel, and that's a fair amount of work. But if your '59 still has its original rear axle with a 4.56 ratio, highway cruising can get old fast.

Best,
