steering box lower seal replacement 120-130

Hello,

You will need a pitman arm puller to remove the arm from the steering box.

You might be able to rent 1 from Autozone or Oreillys auto parts stores.

And removing the seal might be able to be achieved with the method you propose.

But we use a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the seal by pushing the end of a small screwdriver past the lip of the seal and the prying outward and away from the shaft to avoid damaging the polished sealing surface on the shaft using the bottom of the steering box housing as a pry point.

Do be careful with the amount of pressure you apply on the edge of the steering box as it is just aluminum.

You might have to push the screwdriver in and pry in more than 2 spots to pop the seal out.

Make sure the tip of your flat blade screwdriver is smooth has no burrs and is straight.

You might try using a plastic tool instead of a flat blade screwdriver that is used by windshield and window shops.

The tool to which I refer usually has at least 1 end that tapers down to a pretty thin edge which should easily be pushed past the rubber lip of the old seal.

What is most critical is that you do not pry inwards onto the sealing surface of the pitman arm shaft while using our technique so you do not damage the sealing surface on the pitman arm shaft.

We always protect the new seal from damage by covering the splines on the end of the pitman arm shaft before installing the new seal.

We usually use a thin layer of cellophane tape to cover the splines.
