Help - strange vibration from rear 200 1993

Please help - my mechanic is on vacation!

I have a nasty vibration coming from the rear of the car (1993 245) when slowing down. It starts at 20 mph and stops at around 10 mph. Another mechanic said it was tires, and so I switched tires with spares, etc, and it is no better.

The u-joints and front end are tight, motor mounts good. It also happens when it is in neutral, and even happens without applying the brake (just letting the car slow down on it's own) but is more pronounced when braking. At higher speeds it is fine.

One other thing - about two weeks ago I was hit from behind, but there was no damage. It was very slight and the rear bumper just did its thing. The problem started about a week after that, but I can't imagine that the two are related.

What am I missing? What's going on?

Many thanks!

John
