screeching or whirling sound occurred thrice- now gone 900

When I went to start my 940 (about 90K miles) I heard a sound that I thought might be the transmission. It's hard to describe but maybe like a "zzzzzzzzzzz" sound or a whirling sound that I associated with a rotating something. I considered maybe the distributor shaft. It lasted maybe 20-30 seconds and when I shifted to neutral I could still hear it. The next day I heard it at about 2000 RPM. Then I heard it once more (just maybe 20 seconds) and now it has stopped and has not returned after two weeks. So I am wondering what it was. Can I rule out the trans or can the trans whine even in neutral? Did some little washer break apart and the sound vanished when the part did? I don't think it had the pitch or variation of a fan belt screeching. The sound was more of a perfect constant whine. Kind of a spinning sound that a high speed drill might make or a food processor spinning but very high pitch. I think the sound occurred only when I just started up or within the first few minutes of driving. Those are all the clues I have.
