Temporary No-Start 200 1988

I was driving my '88 240 to a few different places, then parked at the supermarket. When I came out about a half hour later, I turned the key and just heard a click - it was like I had a dead battery. I knew it couldn't be that because it started fine twice before in the past two hours. I tried again and just got the click (the panel lights were lit). I waiting about 5 seconds and tried a third time, and it started right up.

Does anyone know what might cause this? I have noticed on occasion that when I start the car there is a split-second pause before the engine turns to start.

Thanks!
