disabled flame trap mystery 200

I'm going through a newly purchased 1990 240GL, and when I came to replacing the flame trap today I found that the narrow hose from the manifold has been plugged up with a bolt, and on the flame trap itself the attachment for the narrow hose was partly snapped off and plugged up with a screw. Now all is as it should be, but I can't understand why someone would do that. Was a vacuum leak suspected at some point? Will I have problems when I try to start and drive the car? (I've got some other things to deal with before I start up the engine).
