Greetings
I have a nice looking Nippon Denso Alternator that I am thinking of swapping
into my 1991 740. It currently has the Bosch which I assume is 80 amp,
although I do not see any markings on the upper viewable side. I am hoping the
used but recently rebuilt Nippon Denso I have acquired might be 100 amp so
would be a beneficial upgrade. ( I have read it may be a better voltage
regulator and possibly more reliable in the long run.)
A couple of questions -
1) How to tell if the Nippon Denso Alternator is an 80 or 100 amp unit.
It came from a 940 but was not the original from the car.
I have looked for part numbers stamped on it and the only number appears
to be from a remanufacturer but no hits on that part number 208020004.
The oldy cast number I can see on the inner aluminium part of the
alternator is 560-1.
2) Assuming it is 100 amp and worth the effort to swap, then i see the pulley
diameter is slightly larger at 69.5 mm od whereas the one in the car is
67 mm. I don't think that should be a problem unless someone has info
to the contrary. It seems I have some adjustment available either side of
where the current alternator is sitting.
3) The connections from the car appear straightforward. A spade tip for the
the brushes. Also a large lug type cable for the output. As far as the
ground is concerned, I trust I could use either of the two studs that
protrude from the Nippon Denso , or is there a designated stud for this
connection ?
Any other tips....thanks Syd
