The moisture, from air, combines with freon type refrigerants to make corrosive compounds. Drawing a vacuum on the system serves two purposes, first to insure the system is all refrigerant and no air, and second to remove the moisture which causes corrosion. I would pull a vacuum over several hours to insure all of the moisture is gone, and charge the system. The seals should be fine.
