Out of the blue, the Engine idle goes all out of whack, barely starts-not driveable 700 1988

What happened? I exit the freeway yesterday and as I slow down, the engine starts "dieseling". Its a B230F - not a diesel. It's running so poorly, I had to shift into neutral and feather the throttle to keep the thing from stalling. I made it home but whe I tried starting it, the starter made a weird noise-not like any starter noise I have heard before. Its like the solenoid isnt getting enough juice to turn the flexplate.
It took me three tries to get it started. Its a factory reconditioned Bosch starter with less than six months of wear. So its got to be something else.

No warning signs other than a momentary fan belt squeal at startup, which started 10 days ago. She ran just fine until I got off the freeway yesterday. Any ideas o where I should start?
