M45 shifter extension question 200

Hi all,
I just pulled a M45 which is to go in my marathon rally 144 (build in progress). I noticed that the arms that hold the shifter are bolted to the casing with little rubber bushes - which on my gearbox were in a pretty sad state.
Can anyone tell me the point of these? I can't understand why Volvo would have wanted some sort of compliance in these arms. Can anyone think of a good reason why I shouldn't replace them with metal bushes and do the bolts up so as to hold the arms rigid?
Regards
John H
