Using the starter ''service socket'' 700 1987

"This takes all the other components out of the equation."

Not quite. The 12V applied to the Service socket goes "directly" to the starter solenoid only if you have a manual transmission. On the Auto tranny cars, the juice applied to the Service socket must still go thru the Start Inhibit (aka "neutral safety") switch to get to the solenoid. But it's also a good place to check for 12V from the Ignition switch on all cars, a possible source of no starter action.

On the 940, the Service socket is Blue rather than Grey, and may be Black on the 240s I haven't seen that one in ages, but believe it's on the firewall.
