SOLVED - sneaky fuel leak 200 1984

1984 244dl B23F/M46/LH2.1(Bosch)

Hey all. I noticed my mpg dropped from around 25 to around 16 with no obvious driveability issues. I noticed clean spots on an otherwise filthy pump, and started replacing items. I replaced the tank to main pump hose, the filter, and the pump to filter hard line.

While replacing the pump to filter hard line, I discovered that it seems the pump itself is leaking either through the electrical connections or between the pump body and the internals at the big crimp that goes all the way around the pump. I'm betting it's at the big crimp.

To make things more interesting, the leak seemed to come and go. It seems like it's acting as a siphon below a certain height relative to the fuel tank, and all but disappearing when the cage is at a normal height. Parking on a hill might make it leak, depending on which way the car is facing.

I've clamped the still-new fuel line and will pull a replacement pump tomorrow, if I get off work early enough.

Cheers!
