Oil leak after reconnecting flame trap 200

My new to me 1990 240 has started leaking oil near the rear of the engine. It's hard to figure out the source, but when I bought the car the flame trap had been disabled and plugged up with a screw and a bolt. I bought and installed a new flame trap, and at about this time the oil leak started. Is it possible that the system was disabled because it was leaking oil? I assume that it would be coming from the plastic oil separator box coming out of the block. I'm considering replacing the box, but I don't know if it's a very unlikely cause. Any help would be much appreciated.
David
