Wheel has play front to back and worn tire 200 1989

My good old '89 240 has thrown a new one at me.

I noticed a shake in the steering wheel and checked the front left tire to find that the outer tread is worn in a gear patter with alternating peaks and valleys.

My 740 had this same issue and it was the ball joint.

So I replaced the ball joint and tie-rod end and put it all back together.

Then I noticed that if I pushed on the wall of the tire at the front or back the wheel would move. I looked close and noticed that the whole tie-rod moves (passenger side tire does NOT exhibit this same issue).

I'm thinking this must mean I need an inner tie-rod? Or, gasp, a steering gear?

Seems like I need to pull the boot off and have a closer look at the inner tie-rod, any other suggestions?
