Montepelier VT Mechanic Wants to Charge Daughter $400 plus to Replace Alternator 200 1992

College daughter got stuck on I-89 from Burlington to Montepelier this week, when her 1992 240 sedan stalled, shuddered a bit, all lights on dash, smell of rubber, stopped. Towed 21 miles to her new neighborhood Sunoco in Montepelier. Mechanic wants $23 each for the two alternator belts, $240 for the alternator (not sure what make), and is "giving her a break" on "two hours labor". Estimate cost is $412 before tax. I, her mom, am out of state, but reading posts on the Brickboard, believe this mechanic leans toward highway robbery. IPD USA has what seems to be the alternator belts for less than $4 each. My daughter says she found a Bosch alternator online for $160. Does that sound right? Not quite DIYs, any advice for the less expensive way? Thanks! (Any Indie Volvo mechanics in Montepelier?)
