gas gauge, sender and speedo cable 120-130

Well, I'm gonna try a little under dash diving this weekend to sort out a few things on the '68 122.

1-gas gauge and sender. Is there a test for the sender using a VOM? I've already added an extra ground wire from he sender mounting flange bolt to the tank mounting screw to try to take care of that. The gauge only comes off empty a little bit, so I'll try to clean the power contacts on the back of the gauge that send power to the sender. How finicky is the gauge itself? Do they go bad with some regularity or what (I know it's 40 years old, what can I expect)?

2-speedo cable. I fished the cable out from behind the fan housing and it seems to short. It exits out the passenger side fender well, which seems strange to me because my firewall has holes that would seem a better route to get to the trans. Which side of the trans does the cable mount? If the cable is wonked, how do I know which length to order replacement? Oh! For a Bently Bible for this car because the Haynes is a POS!

Thanks for all your help so far!!!
