Neutral Safety Switch (PNP Switch): Testing Method? 200 1992

While tracing out a starting issue, I have come upon a test response that I can't readily explain. First off, battery, starter motor/solenoid are not suspect. And I am believing the ignition switch is functioning properly.

Here's my test setup. I have a pigtail from the ignition switch's terminal 50 brought up near the gearshift with a female connector. Likewise, I have a ground wire attached nearby and similarly routed and ended. To these I've connected a test lamp. Test 1: I always know car will not start when this occurs. With car in PARK, I rotate key in ignition switch. Test lamp filament will barely glow. If I pull back gear shift just slightly, I can get the test lamp to glow brightly. If then I rotate key to III, engine will turnover and start. By the way, reverse light will not burn and bulb failure light is not indicated. Car will start in NEUTRAL without manipulating gearshift since the test lamp will glow brightly. As I run through the other gears in position II, the test lamp will glow dimly at each stop. Match marks are aligned. No wobble in gear shift. TEST 2: If I adjust a mismatch in match marks as much as the slotted holes allow, this response is now with the gear shift in NEUTRAL. Car will not start since the filament is in a slight glow until I pull back on the gear shift to get a bright glow. Car will start in PARK with no dim test lamp.

My next step is to disassemble the NSS and clean. Also, I will test the parking shift lock relay. Just couldn't understand the phenomenon.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike
