Shifter-actuated reverse light switch? (M46/M47) 200

Has anyone ever set up a reverse light switch that's actuated by the shifter? I've had a few 240s with manual transmissions, and never had one with reliable reverse lights. Every problem I've had is because of worn out/torn/missing wiring by the switch that is on the transmission.

It looks to me like there might be a way to mount a bracket and small switch to the metal reverse lockout plate that will still fit under the shift boot. Anyone done this? Am I creating a bigger problem than I'm solving?
