Serious issue? Well if the ujoint fails you'd no longer have input regarding the direction of the car, so... :\

Usually it's the lower joint. Try some spray lube on it; if that makes a difference there's your problem. If not, try the upper. Lowers are available, I have read that uppers are NLA, so it may be junkyard time for a good used one.
It's possible that the strut bearing/s are bad, but your symptoms seem like steering shaft related.
