can a dried up rear most u joint ------opinions please 200

be mistaken for a worn rear axle.

the car is a 5 speed 91 with a limited slip differential rear axle installed new from the dealer.

the car sat for 5 years. no movement at all.

the lower front steering u joint was seized and had to be replaced. with the rear end on jack stands and the transmission in neutral turning the drive shaft engages the rear axle with the expected sounds and free play. i drained the axle fluid which was blackish and no metal was present after straining. i refilled the pumpkin with additive as well a 80-90 oil.

driving the car the there is road noise distinct like loud snow tires from the rear axle area at all speeds above 15mph. accelerating or decelerating make no difference in the pitch of kind of sound made.

i was preparing to find a non abs 3.31 rear axle and make the swap.
