stalling, not starting, and gas smell 200 1993

I've had a '93 240 wagon since June and have driven it about a thousand miles. I noticed shortly after I got it that sometimes when I would shut the car off after driving and then start up again after a few minutes, the check engine light would come on and the car would die. It would take three or four tries to get it to start at first, then it seemed that I would need to tap the gas pedal to get it to stay going and not stall out just after starting. More recently, there is a gas smell when driving- can't see any gas dripping anywhere, but there are rainbow puddles that flow out from under the front part of the car when it rains. Then today, it stalled and shut off when I stopped in traffic. It would not re-start. After trying about ten times, I decided to hit the gas as I was turning the key (car was in park at this point). This gave it some power and as long as I kept giving it full gas, it would eventually stay running. I parked it on the street right near where it had died. I tried to start it again after about a minute and the same thing happened. It would only start and stay running if I floored the gas pedal as starting and for about 5 seconds after. I'm afraid it will stall on the way to work tomorrow. Any ideas what could be wrong?
