crank shaft observation 200

I'm doing the TB on my 89 240.I have everything lined up properly.I am using the correct tool to remove the crank shaft pulley. The notch in the gear is at the 0 mark on the cover. But here is what I noticed the pulley has a notch in it,not the timing mark notch.Where the pulley slides on to also has a notch[I forget what it's called].I thought the 2 notches were supposed to line up.If I do that then my timing mark will be off.Is it ok to install the pulley without having to match the two notches? Now I'm confused.Aside from the headgasket the car was running fine.
