To Keep or Salvage 200 1987

I just got my '87 wagon on the road in time to bring my 2 y/o daughter to preschool when I was driving down the freeway and got sideswiped by (ironically enough) another Volvo. Both me and the other driver were fine. She drove away in her Volvo. I was about to drive away when I realized my front wheel had bore the brunt of the impact. The tie rod snapped and I later found out that the control arm partially popped out from the bushing. I still don't know the extent of the damage and the insurance company in investigating. But what I am hearing from the mechanic and the insurance guy is that most likely they will call it a total loss since the price of the repairs will be more than what they believe is the fair market value of the car. Even if they give me the price for a total loss I still have the option of buying the car back for what they would have sold it at salvage.

So here is what I would like some advise on:

1. How bad could it be? The insurance guy was saying something about a gear that would cost $4000. That did not make sense to me and seemed crazy. On FCP you can get a complete steering rack for $300 or so. Maybe $75 for a control arm and tie rods are cheap as well. Anything else that I should be worried about?

2. Worse case scenario how hard can it be to replace the steering rack? If too difficult to handle myself how hard would it be for my mechanic?

3. How much would others be willing to buy it back for. Essentially, how much of a reduction in the total claim would others be willing to take.

The catch is I need a running replacement ASAP.

To give a general idea of what condition my car was in I would say like most Volvos of this vintage, it started up and got me to where I needed to go. It has a 183,000 miles on it. Probably could of used some motor mounts but other than that it ran fine. Cosmetically it is not perfect faded paint ect. Inside looks pretty good considering the year worse part being the cracks in the dash. It has the third row seat in the back. Most importantly my 2 year old loves that she can climb around in it like it is a jungle gym. She has advised me to get a new Volvo, pink with sprinkles.

Any advice will be much appreciated as I will be needing to make a decision soon before. I should be getting a quote about the claim within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Thanks in Advance,

Jason
